Slovakia opens biomethane site that will feed 4Mm3 into national gas grid

April 20, 2026 |

In Slovakia, a biomethane station was opened in Ožďany which represents another concrete step in the development of renewable gases in Slovakia. SPP – distribution connected it to the gas distribution network, increasing the total volume of biomethane into the network by almost 4 million meters 3 per year.

The biomethane station was created by the reconstruction of the original biogas station in Ožďany in the district of Rimavská Sobota. The investor received a subsidy of about 1.5 million euros from the Recovery Plan for the implementation of the project. “The construction of the biomethane station took 24 months and consisted mainly in supplementing the technology for processing, cleaning and odorization of biogas to biomethane,” said Viktor Hegedűs, managing director of CITA VIA, s.r.o., which owns the Ožďany biomethane station.

“The input raw material is local livestock manure and poultry waste,” added V. Hegedűs. Their processing of BMS Ožďany significantly contributes to the sustainable use of residues from agricultural production for energy production in the Gemer-Malohont region. At optimal power, it delivers almost 4 million m of 3 biomethane per year to the grid, which corresponds to an annual consumption of more than 2,400 homes.
