March 19, 2026 |

In India, Shipping Corporation of India signed a shipbuilding contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders on March 18 for one 3,000 dwt methanol dual-fuel diesel-electric platform supply vessel, giving the state-owned carrier its first ship designed to run on green methanol.

The vessel is being positioned as Shipping Corporation of India’s first move into methanol fueled operations and as part of the Indian government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. It will also be built in India under Indian Register of Shipping classification rules, tying the order to the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat programs as well as wider efforts to expand domestic shipbuilding capacity.

The company said the contract supports the growth of India’s shipbuilding ecosystem and aligns with Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amritkaal Vision 2047, the long-range plans set out by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. For Mazagon Dock, the order adds a methanol fueled offshore support vessel to a yard better known for naval construction. For Shipping Corporation of India, it places green methanol into the fleet plan through a signed shipbuilding contract.
