Rio de Janiero gets 100 biomethane-powered vehicles
In Brazil, Rio de Janiero’s waste management company Comlurb recently presented its first truck fleet powered by biomethane. It will have 100 vehicles that will provide home waste collection services, public waste collection and support for the maintenance, operation and cleaning of recycling centers in neighborhoods in the west and southwest. The new models offer equivalent performance to diesel vehicles, but with a reduction of up to 90% in greenhouse gas emissions. Environmental benefits include lower noise levels, contributing to quieter urban operations and lower sound impact in residential and tourist areas. New vehicles include compactor trucks, dump trucks and hook trucks.
The new vehicles will be powered by renewable fuel produced from waste generated in the municipality at the Waste Treatment Center (CTR-Rio) in Seropedic. The advantages of using biomethane include a longer engine life thanks to cleaner combustion, lower fleet wear, lower cost per kilometer than diesel and lower price volatility, since it does not depend on the international oil market.
