Review finds mixed results from edible and non-edible biodiesel blends in reducing NOx

October 29, 2026 |

In India, a review published in Discover Mechanical Engineering examines how biodiesel made from edible and non-edible oils affects nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. Its findings show that results vary significantly depending on feedstock, blend composition, engine conditions and additives. Some combinations reduce NOx substantially, while others produce higher emissions than conventional diesel. The review reports reductions of up to 68.2% for certain safflower biodiesel–kerosene blends and up to 84.6% for pongamia-derived biodiesel. Conversely, some soybean, canola and neem biodiesel blends increase NOx emissions. The authors conclude that feedstock selection and engine optimization are critical to achieving emissions benefits.
