The Renewable Carbon Fiber Consortium at NREL is working on the biological conversion of sugars to 3-hyroxypropionic acid/ester and the novel catalytic conversion of 3-HP to acrylonitrile. Is this the route to cheaper, easier and more environmentally friendly acrylonitrile and the first example of “homogeneous” renewable carbon fiber?
