Port of Açu plans sustainable fuels terminal by 2030
In Brazil, Datamar News reported that the Port of Açu, in northern Rio de Janeiro state, plans to build a terminal dedicated to sustainable fuels as part of its strategy to expand its role in the energy transition.
The Port of Açu sustainable fuels project is expected to support production of green methanol, green ammonia and sustainable aviation fuel, known as SAF, all produced from green hydrogen, as well as biomethane, according to the report.
According to Port of Açu CEO Eugênio Figueiredo, the goal is to concentrate different stages of the fuel chain within the port complex itself, including production and cargo handling.
To support that strategy, Açu’s existing liquids terminal will be used to store the output. The area will be expanded to accommodate green fuel production.
The project, however, is still undergoing environmental licensing, and there is no defined deadline for completion of the structures. Even so, the terminal is part of the port’s priority investment portfolio through 2030.
