In British Columbia, Fortress Paper Ltd., which focuses on dissolving pulp and security paper products, has broken out into the renewable energy area and announced expansion of their Hemicellulose Project. The project is focused on using birch trees and extracting Hemicellulose from them to use for biofuels and biomaterial feedstock. As part of the expansion and investment of $3.65 million in the Hemicellulose Project, Fortress will install a new accumulator at their Fortress Specialty Cellulose Mill to collect hydrolysate and expand its R&D in hemicellulose as a cellulosic sugar for biomaterials. This project operates separately from Fortress Paper’s business in Switzerland that focuses on security paper products, and is hosted in its British Columbia location.
