In Singapore, regulatory authorities have approved the sale of cell-based meat, becoming the first country to do so.
After extensive testing and review, The Singapore Food Agency has approved the sale of Eat Just’s cultured chicken nuggets. The Agency studied chicken samples from 20 production runs and found Eat Just proved its product met Singapore’s poultry standards and had nutrition similar to traditional chicken products.
Based in San Francisco, Eat Just will soon begin limited commercial sales of the nuggets under the GOOD Meat brands.
Good Food Institute Executive Director Bruce Friedrich tells VegNews the move sets a precedent for other countries to “divorce meat production from industrial animal agriculture” and creates a “space race” for the future of food. “Singapore has thrown down the gauntlet and other countries need to pick it up,” Friedrich added. “Cultivated meat will mark an enormous advance in our efforts to create a food supply that is safe, secure, and sustainable, and Singapore is leading the way on this transition.”
Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Eat Just, said the approval will be the first of many. “Working in partnership with the broader agriculture sector and forward-thinking policymakers, companies like ours can help meet the increased demand for animal protein as our population climbs to 9.7 billion by 2050.”
