In Washington, a new Center for Dialysis Innovation has opened at The University of Washington and the Kidney Research Institute. The center will be using biomaterials and bioengineering for patients’ kidney treatment. Their goal in using biomaterials and new technologies is to help dialysis be faster and more cost efficient for the more than 20 million people in the United States that have kidney disease. Using biomaterials and bioengineering could possibly allow patients to be able to move during dialysis, instead of the current process of sitting in a chair for four hours three times a week. It isn’t cheap though, as they are working to raise another $25 million to help fund the center’s activities.
