Air France sets targets to replace plastic with renewable alternatives

In Paris, Air France Flight AF378 from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport to Detroit used biobased materials on several service items to celebrate the United Nations’ 46^th World Environment Day on June 5^th.

The airline has also committed to reducing 1,300 tons of single-use plastic from its in-flight service by the end of 2019. This includes swapping 100 million plastic cups for paper alternatives, replacing 85 million plastic spoons, forks and knives with bioplastic cutlery, and substituting 25 million plastic stirring sticks with wooden ones.

Approximately 2% of global emissions can be attributed to air travel, and the Civil Aviation Organization estimates the industry’s emissions could rise by 300-700% between 2020 and 2050.
