In Vatican City, the Catholic Church has called for a transition to a circular economy, including the use of more biobased products.

Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the scientific arm of the Vatican City and papacy, recently sponsored a biodiversity conference and concluded that human behavior and attitudes needs to radically change to product the planet’s biodiversity.

“Fundamental societal change is needed,”, including individual reduction of ecological footprint and changing consumption patterns, the meeting’s final statement read. “These patterns of social behavior need a course correction… [and] our economic systems need to be redesigned toward circular bio-based economic systems, in which humankind and nature are less in conflict. “Science and innovation, sound governance, and incentives for industry and agriculture need to come together to achieve such a sustainable bioeconomy, adjusted to local circumstances.”
