In Edinburgh, a festival is exploring the relationship between art and science, with many exhibitions highlighting the potential for new materials that reduce environmental impact.

One exhibit highlights the work of Louise Mackenzie from the Institute of Genetic Medicine at Newcastle University. By genetically modifying E. coli, she was able to create a sculpture that changes by sounds.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh College of Art’s Aurelie Fontan displayed a biodegradable fabric from kombucha tea, while Russell Beard created a self-portrait using skin oil instead of paint and Bavarian limestone as a canvas.

The Edinburgh Science Festival runs through April 22.
