In Chicago, Green Package magazine has ranked its top 10 stories of 2018, and not surprisingly efforts by governments, retailers, and corporations to reduce plastics waste by using renewable solutions factored heavily into packaging trends.

Corporate efforts included major announcements by McDonald’s and PepsiCo. McDonald’s vowed to make 100% of its materials come from renewable, recycled, and FSC-certified materials by 2025, while PepsiCo’s NaturALL Bottle Alliance made progress in developing a 100% biobased polyethylene terephthalate bottles.

New technologies also factored into Green Package’s most significant stories. For example, TerraCycle Founder and CEO Tom Szaky discussed the company’s upcycling technology, which creates a supply chain for ocean plastics.  Green Package coverage also included the European Strategy for Plastics, which commits to 100% recyclable plastics in the European Union by 2030, as well as a reduction in single-use plastics and microplastics restrictions.
