In San Francisco, an e-commerce baby food company has partnered with Vericool Inc for cold-chain packaging made from postconsumer plant fiber. Cold chain packaging typically uses expanded polystyrene.
“I created Square Baby to provide busy parents a simple way to ensure their babes receive 100% balanced nutrition each day,” Katie Thomson, Square Baby CEO and Co-Founder, tells Packaging World. “As a mom and as a registered dietitian with food industry experience, I knew there was a way to deliver freshly made, nutritious baby food directly to the doorstep.”
Square Baby currently ships its meals in the eco-friendly coolers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as well as Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. It is looking to further expand distribution.
The coolers are cost-effective and reduce the amount of coolant required. Once the compostable insulation pillow is removed, the rest of the packaging can be recycled.
