Finnish baker taps Sulapac Oy for biodegradable packaging

In Finland, baked goods company Fazer has tapped wood-based packaging start-up Sulapac Oy to reduce the amount of unrecyclable plastic waste that goes into landfills from its products.

Fazer tells Biobased World News the biodegradable packaging will roll out with its premium products first but that the company expects to extend to all its products in time Sulapac’s packaging, also called Sulapac, is made from wood chips—sourced from forests employing sustainable management practices—and natural binders.

Sulapac founder Suvi Haimi says the deal with Fazer shows Sulapac “can meet extremely demanding quality requirements.”

The agreement with Fazer closely follows the announcement that Stora Enso has licensed Sulapac’s technology to produce 100% biobased caps and closures for liquid packaging.
