The program, which is coordinated by AIMPLAS and funded by the European Union, aims to use polyglycolic acid combined with modified silica oxide to create a hybrid coating with improved oxygen and water vapor barrier properties. REFUCOAT is also working to develop a polylactic acid grade with better water vapor barrier attributes than commercially available PLA grades.
Modified atmosphere processes are the current standard for fresh good while metalized material effectively extends the shelf-life of snacks. Neither, however are renewable and both are difficult to recycle.
Twelve partners from five countries are participating in REFUCOAT.
