Herbivore uproar not enough to stop tallow-based currency

In the United Kingdom, vegan outrage over the use of animal fat in currency will not halt the introduction of £10 notes that contain tallow.

The Bank of England has confirmed the tenner will begin circulation in September, as planned, despite pushback from vegetarians and vegans over animal content in the recently issued £5 bills. Officials say that the £10 bills will contain small amounts of rendered beef and mutton fat because alternatives would compromise anti-counterfeiting measures. However, they have not signed a supply content for the planned £20 notes and are weighing plant-based substitutes. The £20s are slated to enter circulation in 2020.
