In California, protein maker Calysta has pledged support for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 aimed at conserving and sustainably use marine resources.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, 90% of marine fish stock species can be classified as over-fished. Calysta’s fermentation technology produces FeedKind fish feed protein and is based on methanotrophs, organisms found in soil that evolved to sequester methane that results from decomposing plant matter.

“Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production system in the world, and this growth is generating demand for new, innovative protein sources,” says Josh Silverman, Ph.D., Calysta Founder and Chief Product and Innovation Officer.  “FeedKind protein, developed using Calysta’s proprietary fermentation technology, can address this need while contributing to the restoration of ocean fish stocks and mitigation of damaging conventional fishing practices.”

Calysta’s proteins can also be used in livestock and pet feed. The company recently broke ground on a commercial-scale facility in Memphis, Tennessee with partner Cargill.
