Dutch research institute to evaluate lignin for aromatics production

In Wisconsin, American Science and Technology will provide its Organosolv lignin to the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands to help accelerate the development of lignin-based products.

ECN will evaluate the lignin in its pyrolysis-based LIBRE technology for producing aromatics. The agreement calls for “multiple” lignin shipments. Additional terms were not disclosed.

University of Washington, Mississippi State University, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, and Washington State University are all using AST’s Organosolv lignin in various research projects. A team at University of Wisconsin-Platteville recently was able to coextrud AST’s Organosolv lignin with other polymers to create new resins that were then injection molded into polymeric parts.

AST has a pilot facility available to help its clients develop biorefinery and chemical technologies to convert lignocellulosic biomass into biobased chemicals and products.
