In the United Kingdom, Biome Bioplastics says it has developed the first compostable and recyclable coffee cup and lid made from eucalyptus.

The outer layer is made from paper from eucalyptus, while the bioplastic inner layer and lid are made from the tree’s leaves. Paul Mines, Biome Bioplastics’ CEO, says that all the materials can be recycled along with other paper products or be broken down in a compost heap to carbon dioxide and water within three months.

The eucalyptus-based bioplastic material can also withstand heat better than other types of bioplastic, heads. Coffee chains are currently testing the cups, Mines tells Sky News. The company is also working with the University of York’s green chemistry department to develop straw-based plastic.
