In Florida, a brewery has developed six-pack rings composed of brewery byproducts. Plastic six pack rings are known for entangling sea life, either killing or constricting the growth of animals such as turtles and seabirds. Saltwater Brewery says its six pack rings will either biodegrade or be safely consumed by sea life.

“We ideated‚ designed‚ tested and prototyped the first ever Edible Six Pack Rings,” brewery cofounder Peter Agardy tells Times Live. “It is made with by-products of the beer making process that instead of killing animals‚ feeds them. They are also 100% biodegradable and compostable.”

The main components of the rings are wheat and barley. The company says that if more breweries adopted edible six pack rings, costs would be competitive with conventional plastics.
