In North Carolina, popular lip balm and skincare maker Burt’s Bees has entered the plant-based functional food market with new protein shakes.

Product launches include protein and probiotic formulations made from pea, rice, flaxseed, sunflower seed, and oat that are more sustainable than animal protein. The formulations also include vitamins extracted from spinach, shiitake mushrooms and strawberries. All provide 15 grams of protein per serving and do not contain any genetically modified organisms, gluten, soy, dairy, or artificial sweeteners or flavors.

“Entering the functional foods space is a natural extension for us,” says Jim Geikie, General Manager for Burt’s Bees. “We’ve been nurturing skin with nature’s most powerful ingredients. Now we’re helping to nourish the body with them.”

The shakes are available at a number of retailers, including burtsbees.com and amazon.com.
