In London, sustainable clothing brand Volleback has made a jacket prototype out of American walnut wood. The brand hopes the jacket will show that wood has the potential to be a viable option for manufacturing clothes.
“Wood is one of the most abundant building materials on the planet and it has been since the beginning of mankind,” Vollebak co-founder Nick Tidball, tells dezeen. “Thirty percent of all the buildings in the world are made from wood, so for me it is a material worth exploring for the clothing industry.”
The admittedly “boxy-looking” coat was made from extremely thin sheets of American walnut, which were attached to cotton via 60 seams. “I believe it will eventually become a highly viable material and we are interested in exploring how we can do this at Vollebak,” Tidball said.
