In Wisconsin, Sativa Building Systems has been awarded a $1.9 million contract by the U.S. Army to develop biobased insulation. The two-year Phase II Small Business Innovation Research project builds on SBS’ previous successes with hemp-based solutions that align with the Department of Defense’s sustainability objectives.

“Our Z Panel hempcrete block panel was a major leap forward in bringing hempcrete into construction,” said Zach Popp, President and Founder of SBS. “We’re excited to expand into lighter, more versatile biobased insulation products with the Army’s support.”

Hempcrete offers superior performance compared to traditional insulation, though it is primarily effective as semi-structural wall insulation. The new project aims to create a product that complements the existing Z Panel and is suitable for a wider range of applications.

The project is set to conclude in September 2026, with goals to deliver functional prototypes and conduct a demonstration project.
