In France, epoxy resin maker Sicomin, Skaw Sailing, and boatbuilder Shoreteam have developed a foiling cruising yacht with partially biobased composite. Dubbed Skaw (A), the yacht was built by Shoreteam and designed by Benoit Marie, founder of Scaw Sailing, and Clément Bercault.
According to Composites World, Skaw (A) uses Sicomin’s high-modulus GreenPoxy resin solutions, including SR InfuGreen 171 for larger parts and SR GreenPoxy 170 for hand laminating and bonding the secondary structures. The resins have comparable strength and durability to conventional, petrochemically based resins but with better carbon footprint. They also allowed for the design to remove 5,000 kilograms of material, helping to lightweight the yacht for racing efficacy.
“Our SR InfuGreen 171 and SR GreenPoxy 170 were an ideal fit for this ambitious project,” said Sicomin’s Tom Kerriou. “We are excited to see our sustainable GreenPoxy epoxy solutions contribute to the success of this design and we look forward to supporting Skaw Sailing and Shoreteam in bringing this yacht to life.”
