Circular spuds: Tater major Lamb Weston taps SABIC and Oerlemans Plastics to convert cooking oil into potato packaging

In Idaho, Lamb Weston has teamed up with global chemicals leader SABIC and Oerlemans Plastics to introduce an innovative, sustainable packaging solution for frozen potato products. This new packaging is composed of at least 60% biobased polymers sourced from used cooking oil, resulting in a carbon footprint reduction of approximately 30%.

The packaging development utilizes a closed-loop process, starting with the collection of UCO from Lamb Weston’s facilities. The UCO is transformed into biobased feedstock, which is then used to pro-duce SABIC’s certified renewable high-density polyethylene and metallocene linear low-density polyethylene. Oerlemans Plastics processes these materials into a multilayer polyethylene film, designed to enhance strength, flexibility, and barrier properties, ensuring food safety and compliance with both European and U.S. regulations.

Launched in September 2024 in the UK and the Netherlands, this packaging initiative supports Lamb Weston’s commitment to reducing its overall product carbon footprint by 25% and adopting more circular production methods by 2030.
