PackHub highlights Nestlé’s edible noodle fork, Suzuki outboard motor packaging

In the UK, packaging consultancy PackHub has added edible forks for packaged noodles, biobased motor cushioning, and silphium fiber cosmetics packaging to its “Innovation Zone,” database of packaging innovations.

The plant-based fork from Nestlé is made from wheat flour and salt and has been offered in a limited-edition packaging for its Maggi cup noodles in India. “This initiative is part of Nestlé’s broader commitment to reducing plastic use in packaging, which includes redesigning accessories such as straws, cups, and cutlery, simplifying packaging materials, and exploring reusable and refillable systems,” PackHub said.

Suzuki Motor Corporation’s use of a biodegradable polymer cushioning for packaging outboard motors was also added to the database. Dubbed Green Planet, the material is made from 100% biomass-derived polymers and decomposes easily in seawater. The cosmetics packaging is being used by German retail brand Kaufland and is produced from silphium, a “robust perennial plant” cultivated around Lake Constance in Germany. “The silphium-based packaging, known as SilphieBoard, is notable for its sustainable production methods, using little water and energy and foregoing chemical treatments,” PackHub said. “The material’s natural brownish hue, a result of avoiding chemical bleaching, complements the natural ethos of Kaufland’s bevola naturals cosmetics line.”
