In New York, America’s most famous competitive eater will be excluded from Nathan’s Fourth of July hot dog-eating contest for daring to endorse a plant-based hot dog

Joey Chestnut told the New York Post  he is “gutted” by the ban, which stems from his agreement to represent Impossible Foods’ vegan alternative.

“I love competing in that event, I love celebrating America with my fans all over this great country on the 4th and I have been training to defend my title,” Chestnut wrote on X.  “Sadly, this is the decision Nathan’s and Major League Eating are making, and it will deprive the great fans of the holiday’s usual joy and entertainment. To my fans, I love you and appreciate you. Rest assured that you’ll see me eat again soon!! STAY HUNGRY!”

Chestnut has won the event a remarkable 16 times. In 2021, he at a record 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

In a press statement, Impossible Foods said it “love[s]” Joey and supports him in any contest. “It’s OK to experiment with a new dog. Meat eaters shouldn’t have to be exclusive to just one wiener.”
