In Massachusetts, BCC Research has released a report forecasting a “remarkable growth surge” for biobased leather.

The study looked at both fully and partly biobased leathers. It also covers innovative raw materials, including cactus, pineapple, cork, and others like mushrooms and grapes, as well as applications, such as shoes, bags, and jackets. The market research firm expects the category to grow 6.2% annually to reach $902.4 million by the end of 2028.

“More people in countries like India and China are buying luxury brands, especially younger people after the pandemic,” BCC said in a press statement. “This boosts the demand for bio-based leather. Most companies focus on making leather from only one thing, like pineapple or mushrooms. They want to be good at one thing instead of trying to make leather from everything.”
