In New York, eco-friendly lifestyle publication Green Matters has published a listicle of sustainable dreidels for greener Hanukkah celebration.

Most versions of the spinning holiday toy are made of plastic, but the Green Matters list features plantable dreidels infused with seeds and edible dreidels made of candy.

Fair Trade Judaica sells Seed Dreidels that are made from tagua seeds sustainably grown in Ecuador. Production abides by strict environmental and ethical regulations, according to the publication.

Green Matters also suggests DIY options using seed paper, clay, or candy.

“If you can find seed paper that contains seeds native to your area, that’s the best way to do it,” it says. “Seed paper and planting non-native plants doesn’t benefit pollinators, or the ecosystem, as much as native plants do. But either way, anything is better than plastic.”

Bible Belt Balabusta, a kids craft site, has directions on how to make candy dreidels that can be eaten when the holiday is over, Green Matters adds. The directions call for pretzel handles, caramel bases, and a chocolate kiss for the tip.
