In the United Kingdom, a music industry sustainability collective says the world’s first bioplastic vinyl record has gone on sale.
First announced by Music Declares Emergency and Evolution Music in April, the album is called “No Music on a Dead Planet” and features tracks by Bicep, Angel Olsen, Black Country, New Road and Porridge Radio. Only 20 records were produced, and interested parties had to buy a raffle ticket at last weekend’s Independent Label Market at Coal Drops Yard in London’s King’s Cross.
“It is very exciting to be trialing sustainable bioplastic vinyl pressings, and with such brilliant tunes,” says Peter Quicke of Ninja Tune, a label with artists featured on the LP. “We all love vinyl but the current manufacture process involves a significant amount of pollution, so we’ve been looking for alternatives. Massive props to Evolution Music for coming up with a solution.”
All funds raised will help support MDE’s efforts to decarbonize the music industry. The group recently announced a partnership with Festival Republic to increase use of renewable power at UK music festivals.
