In the United Kingdom, luxury sports car maker McLaren has tapped tire major Pirelli for 50% renewable and recyclable tires.
The project is the result of close collaboration between the Research and Development teams at Pirelli and McLaren—for which Pirelli is the sole supplier—and involved “true teamwork” right from the initial stages of development and testing.
Pirelli models the P Zero R, P Zero Trofeo RS and P Zero Winter 2 will be used in McLaren W1. The tires are custom-developed for Maclaren’s new rear-wheel-drive supercar boasting 1,275 HP.
The P Zero R, the first developed for a McLaren, is designed for everyday driving; the P Zero Trofeo RS, engineered for the track but also type-approved for road use, ensures consistently high performance; while the P Zero Winter 2 is available for the colder seasons.
The biobased and recycled content varies between 14.56%–15.03% and 34.97%–35.44% respectively. Biobased materials include natural rubber, biochemicals, and bio-resins, while recycled materials include metallic reinforcements, rubber recovered from end-of-life tires, and, via mass balance, synthetic rubber, silica, and carbon black.
