In Sydney, Australia, a new Pier Pavilion designed by Besley & Spresser has been built using waste rock oyster shells.
Comprising a “striking landscape roof,” the pavilion finds a use for the city’s bustling seafood industry. The shells impart a “subtle, pearly sheen” and demonstrate the potential for eco-friendly materials in city planning. According to Yanko Design, the space transforms after dark, as soft lighting accentuates its curved roof and the glimmering texture of recycled oyster shells.
The structure is the product of extensive community consultation, with local stakeholders actively involved throughout the design process. The result is a space that blends seamlessly into the city’s urban landscape, embodying both its cultural identity and creative spirit, according to the deign publication.
