Soybean foam cuts firefighters’ exposure to PFAS

In Michigan, Cross Plains Solutions has developed a soybean-based alternative to Aqueous Film-Forming Foam, a firefighting foam that contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Dubbed SoyFoam TF 1122, CPS’ material was developed with funding from the United Soybean Board. It is PFAS free, biodegradable, and 70% biobased.

Patrick Butler, a former firefighter and co-owner of PK Foam Solutions, which sells SoyFoam TF 1122, speculates AFFF may have played a role in his bladder cancer. Now in remission, tells Michigan Farm News he doesn’t want other firefighters to suffer the same fate.  “[I]f we can sell a few more soybeans in the state of Michigan and make a safe product, we need to be doing that,” he added.
