In Sweden, Absolut Vodka has inked a new partnership with start-up Blue Ocean Closures to increase the use of biodegradable materials in its packaging.

According to Drinks Retailing, Absolut and Blue Ocean Closures have developed a cap out of 95% Forest Stewardship Council-certified fibers, with a thin top seal barrier made of plastic.

The innovation comes two years after the ubiquitous vodka brand launched its first paper bottle. It was developed as part of the Pabobco bottle initiative, which also includes brands such as Coca-Cola Company, Carlsberg, Procter & Gamble and L’Oréal.

“2023 saw the development of the Absolut paper-based bottle, a pioneering initiative that helped us push boundaries towards our fully biobased bottle,” said Louise Werner, director of future packaging at Absolut. “However, the final piece of the puzzle remained. Creating real impact is hard and change can only come about as a collective endeavor so we are thrilled to partner with Blue Ocean Closures to help us on the journey.”
