In Pennsylvania, Ethan Albright, a Hempfield High teen and fishing enthusiast, has won third place at the recent International Science and Engineering Fair with biodegradable fishing lures.

Made from calcium lactate, gelatin, corn starch, and sodium alginate, Albright’s lures biodegrade in about 16 days and are intended to cut down on plastics waste found in waterways and the digestive systems of fish.

Albright tells Outdoor Life he also hopes to commercialize his invention. “I think we’re just gonna start with the five-inch worms,” Albright says. “Once we can start making a profit there, we’ll definitely expand. And one day, maybe we can get them manufactured somewhere other than my kitchen.”
