In South Korea, designers Chaewon Lee, Zay Kim, Jungmin Park have developed biodegradable urban habitats for butterflies.
Dubbed EggNest, the 3D printed structures are made from eggshells and soil. Its rough surfaces help butterflies cling to it when it’s windy, and the curves of the design create little homes for butterflies to wait out cold weather. The spaces also encourages climbing plants to grow, providing nectar and camouflage for the butterflies.
According to Yanko Design, butterflies are key pollinators and bioindicators, but have seen their global population decline by 53%.
