In Miami, an annual art and design festival featured a bioplastic, compostable stools from Slovakia studio Crafting Plastics. The design firm created several pieces made using Nuatan, a proprietary polyhydroxy alkaloids biomaterial that is 100% biobased and compostable.
“We are expecting our products and furniture pieces to endure generations,” Crafting Plastics cofounder Vlasta Kubušová told home décor publication Dwell. But, she adds, the piece could be industrial composted or recycled should the owner grow tired of it. “[W]e are having more conversations about plastic’s consequences” and how bioplastic can replace fossil fuel-based materials, she added.
The blue, orange and white stools included in Crafting Plastics’ display would be suitable for a “poolside cabana,” according to Dwell.
