In Japan, a biobased engineering plastic produced by Mitsubishi Chemical Group is being used in the front grill of Fronx, a new compact SUV from Suzuki Motor Corporation.

The bioplastic, trade named Durabio, is made from plant-based isosorbide. Offering “excellent impact resistance, scratch resistance, and colorability, this material is being developed for use across a wide range of fields, including automotive interior and exterior parts, optical and electronic device components, and everyday sundries,” Mitsubishi Chemical Group said in a press statement.

Fronx was introduced in October. It is being produced in India for local and export markets. Durabio has also been used for front grills on Suzuki’s domestic and overseas models such as Swift, Spacia Custom and Vitara.
