In Tokyo, Toyo Engineering Corp. has been awarded the front-end engineering design contract for a biobased ethanol-to-ethylene production facility by Braskem Siam Company Ltd., a joint venture between Brazil’s Braskem S.A. and Thailand’s SCG Chemicals plc. The collaboration, initiated in August 2023, marks a significant step toward the Final Investment Decision for the project.
Utilizing the EtE Evergreen process technology licensed by Lummus and Braskem B.V., the Thailand facility will produce “I’m green” biobased polyethylene from renewable feedstock, specifically ethanol derived from sugarcane. The innovative method aims to significantly lower the carbon footprint of plastic products by capturing atmospheric CO₂. The resulting biobased ethylene will be essential for manufacturing sustainable polyolefins, contributing to eco-friendly products such as food packaging, household items, toys, and safety equipment.
