In Finland, VTT Technical Research Centre, LUT University, and industry partners have launched a pilot plant in Espoo to convert captured carbon dioxide into sustainable compounds for plastic products and chemicals. Dubbed Forest CUMP, the research collaboration funded by Business Finland and is exploring the capture of carbon dioxide from sources like the forest industry and waste incineration for use in the production of high-value products such as polypropylene and polyethylene.

“Finland has immense potential to lead in biobased carbon dioxide utilization,” stated Juha Lehtonen, Research Professor at VTT.

The project is set to run until the end of 2024 with Borealis, Neste, Stora Enso, and Fortum also collaborating.
