In the US, PoLoPo has asked regulators to approve its technology for growing egg proteins in potatoes. The SuperAA platform leverages potato’s natural productivity and storage organs to grow proteins that are identical to protein derived from a chicken’s egg.   Once the potatoes reach a certain size, the proteins can be extracted for dried to a powder.

The Regulatory Status Review request to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Inspection Service will establish the technology is not a risk to US agriculture and allow PoLoPo to proceed with commercial plans to grow the potatoes in the US, according to Green Queen.

PoLoPo, which is based in Israel, developed the technology using metabolic engineering.
