In India, IIT Guwahati has developed 3D-printed dummy ballots made of biobased polylactic acid.

Commissioned by the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation Cell, the ballots are used to familiarize voters, including first-timers and senior citizens, with voting  procedures. The PLA ballots are produced using corn starch and are biodegradable.

According to a statement on IIT Guwahati’s website, the ballots were designed and manufactured in just 48 hours.

“We commend IIT Guwahati for their collaboration and swift design and manufacturing of this highly practical tool,” said Smt. Keerthi Jalli, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup, Guwahati, Assam. “It is certain to aid individuals in gaining familiarity with the voting process, thereby bolstering their confidence, and encouraging greater participation in democratic practices.”
