In Italy, iGreenGadgets has created biodegradable cell phone cases with embedded seeds in an effort to reduce the waste associated with iPhone or Android upgrades. Made from cornstarch and natural pigments, the iGreen Cover case provides the same level of protection as a traditional case, but at the end of its life can be planted in a pot or garden.

According to Yanko Design, the seeds are preserved by a water-soluble film within the case. To grow a plant, users simply have to put the case in a pot with the cover at a 30 -degree angle, submerge the bottom half with soil, and provide water and sunlight. Seed varieties include basil, daisies, or forget-me-nots, depending on which case color is chosen.
