In Japan, Neste, Mitsui Chemicals and Mitsui subsidiary Prime Polymer have partnered to provide biobased food packaging solutions for CO-OP, a brand of the Japanese Consumers Co-operative Union.

Under the terms of the agreement, Neste will provide renewable Neste RE, a feedstock for polymers that is made entirely from biobased raw materials. Mitsui Chemicals and Prime Polymer will process Neste RE into polypropylene. In the first phase of the collaboration, the material will be used to package a seaweed snack, and the companies expect to expand into other products over time.

“Change begins with small things. In this case, it’s slices of dried seaweed,” says Lilyana Budyanto, Head of Sustainable Partnerships APAC at Neste’s Renewable Polymers and Chemicals business unit.
