In South Korea, LG Chem and GS Caltex have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance their efforts to develop biobased 3-hydroxypropionic acid, an essential raw material for biodegradable plastics.

The MOU follows a 2021 Joint Development Agreement between the two companies and construction of a 3HP testing plant at the GS Caltex Yeosu Plant in July of the same year. The recently completed plant sets the stage for prototype production, slated to begin in the first quarter of 2024.

Plastics derived from 3HP show “exemplary biodegradability and flexibility,” according to a statement from the companies. 3HP can also be transformed into bio-acrylic acid, which can be used to produce super absorbent polymers for diapers, paints, adhesives, coating materials, and carbon fiber.
