Dole addresses compost conundrum

In Ireland, banana behemoth Dole is using biodegradable produce stickers on bananas sold in northern Europe, making it easier for consumers there to compost.

Manufactured by Sinclair, a produce labeling solutions company located in California, the stickers are made of biobased and plastic-free ingredients and certified for use with all fruit and vegetables.

“This is a major benefit for Dole customers, who can simply put Dole banana peels and stickers on their home compost heaps and know they are helping the environment,” a Dole spokesperson told Fruit Net.

Produce stickers are key to food distribution and tracking, but are among the worst contaminants for compost streams.
