In Scotland, Enough has raised €40 million (US$43.5 million) to double mycoprotein production capacity at its production site in the Netherlands. The funds will also be used to add staff at the company’s’ offices in Glasgow, London, and Sas van Gent.

Founded as 3F BIO in 2015 by Jim Laird, the company employs proprietary technology that grows fungi with sugars derived from renewable feedstocks. It subsequently ferments the fungi to produce its Abunda-brand mycoprotein. Enough says Abunda possesses a neutral flavor, substantial protein and fiber content, and a texture reminiscent of meat. It believes Abunda can be used for plant-based alternatives to meat, fish, and dairy products. Furthermore, Abunda is “up to 15 times more efficient than protein from beef.”

“Our focus in the coming years will be on aligning capacity with the growing demand curve, striking a balance in a burgeoning industry,” Laird tells TechCrunch.  Abunda counts M&S and Unilever among its development partners.
