In Australia, algae bioplastics maker Kelpy has partnered with SOS Carbon to make use of the giant sargassum bloom that is threatening tourism and fishing throughout the Caribbean.

At 5,000 miles wide, this year’s Atlantic sargassum bloom is the largest ever seen at this time of year. The partnership will leverage the Littoral Collection Module harvesting technology developed by SOS Carbon, an MIT Spinoff, and Kelpy’s algae-to-bioplastic pellet process.

LCMs are mounted to fishing boats throughout the Caribbean, allowing for a cost-effective, environmentally friendly collection solution which can be easily scaled throughout the region. The LCM can be deployed in less than two weeks from factory to site and harvest up to 70 tonnes per day.

“Tackling the issue of saving our oceans is going to rely on the efforts of many organizations from around the world working together to find solutions to common problems,” Kelpy founder Finial Quin said in a press statement.
