In Sweden, a startup has received a €440,000 ($485,000) grant to scale up an edible cucumber coating made from a plant-based materials.

Saveggy says the coating boosts shelf life by preventing dehydration, oxidation, and fungal growth.

The funds will be dispersed by Eurostar, a program administered by European Research Agency and the European Commission to help small and medium-sized businesses in Europe to advance innovative ideas.

Over 40% of fruits and vegetables end up being thrown away every year. Farmers currently use plastic to prevent water loss and bacterial contamination, but regulatory pressure on plastics is inspiring companies like Saveggy to find more eco-friendly alternatives.
